[Edit:  The error came back for me on 8/25/2017.  I checked the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\VFS\SystemX86 folder and the MSCOMCTL.OCX was dated 8/25/2017 so I had to copy the file again as outlined below. – Rob]

There was an update to Excel 2016 that was released mid-August that caused an error with Sage 300 Financial Reporter. These errors display while printing from the Print Financial Statements window:

Initializing FR Error (12): Fail in starting Print Financial Statements

Initializing FR Error (12): Fail in starting Print Financial Statements

PrintReport : Error on running StartGL9100 in macro.

PrintReport : Error on running StartGL9100 in macro.

Within the Statement Designer, the FR View and FR Paste menu items appear to do nothing.

The Fix

Replacing an updated file with an older version fixes the errors.  Take care in renaming and copying the files described below.  There are a few files in these folders with similar names.

  1. Close Excel and any of the Financial Reporter windows
  2. Locate the file MSCOMCTL.ocx in the following folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\VFS\SystemX86
  3. Re-name it to MSCOMCTL.BAK
  4. Copy C:\Windows\SysWOW64\MSCOMCTL.ocx to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\VFS\SystemX86 folder

This should resolve the errors in both Print Financial Statements and Statement Designer.
